MÉRÉDITH CARON “Fabric is between the flesh and the soul. This is where I love to slide.” One of the top costume designers in Canada, Mérédith Caron was originally planning a career in clinical psychology when she came across a prospectus for a course in the creation of theatre costumes and sets. “I immediately understood that I had found my true vocation," she says. And she has been in the profession ever since, dividing her time between theatre, film and opera, designing for more than 150 productions. After two years of studies in set design at the Conservatory of Dramatic Art of Quebec, Mérédith Caron graduated from the National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal. The well-known Montreal director André Brassard then invited her to design the sets and costumes for the play Sainte-Carmen de la Main by Michel Tremblay, presented at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto. In 1978, she spent a year in Italy, mainly in Venice, where she studied Italian, took an internship in photography at the Universita Internazionale dell'Arte and studied the daily life of Venice in the 19 th century in the library of Casa Goldoni. Mérédith has worked with many of Canada and Quebec’s great theatre directors: Serge Denoncourt, Denise Filiatrault, André Brassard, Robert Lepage, Matine Beaulne, René-Richard Cyr, Daniele Finzi Pasca and Richard Monette, for Molière's The Miser and the lavish The Three Musketeers at the prestigious Stratford Festival. She has received many prestigious awards in Quebec, including a Gémeau, five Gascon-Roux and two Masque awards. In addition to her work in theatre, Mérédith teaches the history of art and costume design at the National Theatre School. CRISS ANGEL Believe marks the second time Mérédith has worked with Cirque du Soleil. “It’s a show that conjures up various eras and evokes different worlds, the Victorian period , the extravagant universe of Criss Angel and my own imagination.’’ In this show, the forces of the night stand in opposition to the forces of the day and in the center, there is illusion – and that is the surreal space that I most like to find myself in. With my costumes, I want to deceive the eye." Mérédith Caron was born on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec. For further information please contact Press Services. |
