Over the course of 2012, a total of 20 unique Cirque du Soleil shows were performed in 216 cities throughout the world. An entirely new production was also launched in April 2012: Amaluna. Some of our shows have also taken up temporary residence in several new markets: Bulgaria, Greece, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Poland, Qatar, Romania and Slovakia. Finally, 2012 was also notable for the release of the first Cirque du Soleil film: Worlds Away 3D, produced by James Cameron and directed by Andrew Adamson.

Over the course of 2012, a total of 20 Cirque du Soleil shows were performed in 216 cities: Six big top touring shows: Amaluna, Corteo, KOOZA, TOTEM, OVO and Varekai; Five touring arena shows: Alegría, Dralion, Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour, Quidam and Saltimbanco; Nine resident shows: “O”, CRISS ANGEL Believe, KÀ, The Beatles LOVE, Mystère, Zarkana and Zumanity (in Las Vegas), IRIS (in Los Angeles) and La Nouba (in Orlando).

Over the course of 2012, Cirque du Soleil received some awards. During the celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Quebec Government Office in London and with a view to emphasizing the importance of business links between Quebec and the United Kingdom, the Quebec Government Office in London awarded Cirque du Soleil the Caisse de dépôt Special Award in recognition of the contribution made by Cirque du Soleil to the British economy.

In 2012, the organization saw the implementation of various sustainable development initiatives.
Several workshops on sustainable development were carried out throughout the year to explain this concept to employees and to identify ways of improving sustainable development within the organization. In fact, almost one hundred international headquarters employees from a variety of business units across the organization took part in these workshops.

Rather than buying carbon credits in order to become carbon neutral, Cirque du Soleil has, since 2011, decided to prioritize reducing its own greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). An amount equivalent to a potential purchase of carbon credits is therefore put into a fund whose purpose is to contribute to innovative GHG reduction projects. This fund, which has been named carbon reserve, has made a financial contribution to many projects, whose impact was measured in 2012.

Special Projects

After touring the globe for 20 years, visiting around fifty countries and more than 200 cities, the Cirque du Soleil troupe of Saltimbanco took its farewell bow on December 30, 2012. Particularly recognized for the extent of its involvement and its many social initiatives within communities it visits, the Saltimbanco troupe took its social action initiatives one step further during its stay in Battambang, in Cambodia.

From its very beginning, Cirque du Soleil has strived to forge and maintain strong and mutually beneficial links with the communities in which its many shows are based. In this spirit, 2012 saw Cirque du Soleil celebrate 20 years of community engagement in Las Vegas. As a fully engaged and committed citizen and good neighbor, Cirque du Soleil is actively involved in the local community, helping it to develop and increase its visibility.

In 2012, as a way of sharing the educational tools developed over the last few years and to enhance the social circus development, Cirque du Soleil put in place the Cirque du Monde Platform. Online sharing forum and community of practice development tool, the Platform is currently the only 2.0 meeting point bringing together almost 300 collaborators from the social circus world.

During the summer of 2013, 12 employees took part in the TAPIS VERT project. This summer management workshop was a great success. The goals of TAPIS VERT was to motivate participants and help them build relationships with each other, stimulate their creativity, as well as make them aware of the organizational culture and allows them to see a different side of the Cirque du Soleil.
