Saltimbanco: A dedicated Troupe Bows Out

After touring the globe for 20 years, visiting around fifty countries and more than 200 cities, the Cirque du Soleil troupe of Saltimbanco took its farewell bow on December 30, 2012 before the Montreal public that had applauded its very first show.

Created in 1992, Saltimbanco was a first-choice ambassador throughout the world for Cirque du Soleil. After more than 6000 big top and arena performances, this whimsical, dreamlike production has filled more than 14 million spectators with wonder and served as a calling card in 150 cities where Cirque du Soleil had not yet had the opportunity of performing. Saltimbanco is also the only Cirque du Soleil show to have set foot in all five continents. In celebrating its 20th anniversary, Saltimbanco has also beaten the records set by Cats and Les Misérables, which ran for 18 and 16 years respectively in the legendary Broadway Theatre. No mean feat in the entertainment industry.

The exceptional artistic journey of Saltimbanco did not pass unnoticed in the province of Quebec. It was honoured by various celebrations and awards, such as a special motion passed by the City of Montreal and also by the National Assembly of Quebec.

The Saltimbanco troupe is recognized in particular for the extent of its involvement and its many social initiatives within communities it visits: social circus workshops, make-up workshops, fundraising, hospital visits, gifts of food, medication and clothes, etc. In 2012, Saltimbanco took its troupe’s social action initiatives one step further by proposing a pilot project of volunteer work achieved by six members within the Phare Ponleu Selpak (PPS) organization in Battambang, Cambodia. Between August 20 and 27, the six performers provided daily acting, dance and acrobatics workshops for young students at PPS, a social center and arts school offering disadvantaged young people a way out through quality professional artistic training. This voluntary work experience has proved to be particularly inspiring and very rewarding for all involved, creating a strong feeling of mutual help, solidarity and achievement in its participants.

Having sprinkled the planet with magic and left an indelible mark on the imaginations of millions of spectators, Saltimbanco has chosen a very gracious way of ending its fabulous adventure.
