In the fall of 2006 Cirque du Soleil adopted a proactive environmental policy based on sustainable development in order to communicate its commitment to the environment.
Cirque du Soleil's environmental policy addresses major issues including:
- Water Management
- Air Quality and Climate Change
- Waste Management and Hazardous Waste Disposal
- Education and Awareness
As part of the policy Cirque du Soleil pledges to:
- Conform with all environmental legal requirements it is subject to
- Use preventive measures to reduce the environmental impact of the company's products and services
- Ensure continuous improvement in its environmental performance
- Take the environment into account in all business decisions
Cirque du Soleil’s environmental initiatives take place wherever its activities are, both in its administrative offices and its show venues. Operationally, a team is based at the Montreal International Headquarters, where specialists support the organization’s different sectors in the implementation of their environmental performance improvement initiatives. Cirque du Soleil representatives are also included in the environmental committees of some of our resident show partners, in order to collaborate in improving the environmental performance of our joint activities and to exchange best practices.
The organization also includes a dozen touring teams for its big top and arena shows. In order to facilitate communication on environmental issues between these mobile teams, Green Committees were created for each touring show to ensure the environmental policy is adhered to. To share best practices and successful initiatives with the other shows, teleconferences are organized between committee coordinators several times a year, and information and documentation on environmental practices, as well as useful tools, are exchanged through an in-house electronic platform.
