CREATIVE CENTRE

More than office spaces, this wing of the International Headquarters (located in Montreal), includes three acrobatic training rooms, a dance studio, a studio-theater and weight-training facilities. After being recruited by our Casting department, all artists who join Cirque du Soleil for a new creation are required to come here for preparatory training before joining a show’s cast. Training can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.

In addition to encompassing our corporate departments, the International Headquarters also houses all core activities of our creative process:

  • artists, show creators and producers in the Artist Studios
  • all kind of craftmanship specialists, from shoe-makers to carpenters in the workshops

To support worlwide activities, a few local offices also provide direct support to our employees on-site.

INTERNATIONAL HEADQUARTERS

Cirque du Soleil International Headquarters stands proudly in the borough of Saint-Michel (among the five most underprivileged areas in Canada), on the site of the former Miron sandpit and Montreal Waste Treatment and Disposal Centre. Construction of its International Headquarters is part of a larger Saint-Michel initiative: an urban development program where Cirque du Soleil embodies the cultural centre of the borough’s Environmental Complex.

The landscape surrounding the International Headquarters was also conceived in an original way. Like Cirque du Soleil’s image, the food garden and other gardens on the property transform and evolve with the seasons. Complementing shrubs, apple trees and rose bushes, International Headquarters' gardeners have established a space to grow vegetables and herbs right in front of the building. Food from the garden is used to prepare employee meals, with surplus garden food being given to them.

THE WORKSHOPS

Each custom-made costume and accessory for every one of Cirque du Soleil’s shows is created in the workshops at our International Headquarters in Montreal. All manner of specialists (shoemakers, hatters, textiles, dressmakers, lacemakers, carpenters, etc.) work meticulously to design and produce these elements of a show.

Opening its doors in early 2001, The Workshops section of the International Headquarters houses office spaces and production workshops, including the enormous costume workshop, as well as workshops for shoes, hats, accessories, clothing design and fitting rooms.

Cirque du Soleil various workshops are filled with nearly 400 craftspeople bringing to life more than 25,000 elements (hats, shoes, dresses, shirts, etc.) for the 21 Cirque du Soleil shows performing today. The clothing design team, alone, uses almost 130 kilometers of diverse fabrics, annually, while 80% of those materials are treated and dyed on the spot by our textile design team.

ARTIST STUDIOS

The mandate of The Studio’s creative team goes beyond training Cirque du Soleil’s artists. It is also the centre of development of new equipment and acrobatic techniques for all of the company’s projects, where research is ongoing and conducted by an experienced team of trainers and riggers. When needed, The Studio hires engineers and specialists from advanced fields of technology to assist in research and development.
