  Oprichter en Creative Guide

  Guy Laliberté is in 1959 geboren in Québec. Deze accordeonist, steltloper en vuurvreter heeft met ondersteuning van een kleine groep mensen het allereerste internationaal vermaarde circus van Québec opgericht. Guy Laliberté, een dappere visionair, herkende en gebruikte de talenten van straatartiesten van het Fête foraine de Baie-Saint-Paul en richtte in 1984 Cirque du Soleil op.

  Guy Laliberté was de eerste die de mix van culturen en artistieke en acrobatische disciplines samenbracht, wat ook vandaag de dag nog kenmerkend is voor Cirque du Soleil. Sinds 1984 staat hij aan het hoofd van het creatieve team en helpt hij de medewerkers bij de ontwikkeling van elke show. Daarnaast heeft hij eraan bijgedragen dat circuskunsten tegenwoordig worden gezien als een belangrijke artistieke discipline.

  Cirque du Soleil is een internationale organisatie; zowel wat betreft de stijl en activiteiten als de invloed die het circus uitoefent. Guy Laliberté staat nu aan het hoofd van een organisatie met activiteiten die zich uitstrekken over vijf continenten.

  In oktober 2007 begon Guy Laliberté aan een tweede project: de ONE DROP Foundation, die tot doel heeft om wereldwijd armoede te bestrijden door mensen van schoon water te voorzien.  Deze nieuwe droom komt voort uit het gegeven dat het recht op water van essentieel belang is om te kunnen overleven en uit de normen en waarden die al sinds de oprichting een belangrijke rol spelen bij Cirque du Soleil:  de gedachte dat het leven alles wat iemand geeft ook weer teruggeeft en dat daarbij zelfs het kleinste gebaar een verschil maakt.

  In september 2009 werd Guy Laliberté de eerste Canadese privéruimtevaarder.  Zijn doel was om mensen bewust te maken van de waterproblemen waarmee de aarde en mensheid te maken hebben. Onder het motto Moving Stars and Earth for Water was de eerste poëtisch-sociale missie in de ruimte een feit. De bedoeling was mensen te raken vanuit een artistieke benadering: een speciale, 120 minuten durende webcast met verschillende optredens in veertien steden op vijf continenten, zelfs in het internationale ruimtestation ISS.

  Belangrijkste awards en onderscheidingen
  In 2011 werd Guy Laliberté opgenomen in de Order of the Canadian Business Hall of Fame. In 2010 kreeg Guy zijn eigen ster op de Hollywood Walk of Fame. In hetzelfde jaar werd Guy door de regering van Québec gepromoveerd van ridder (een titel die hij zes jaar eerder kreeg) tot officier in de Ordre de la Pléiade. De Université Laval (Québec) verleende Guy Laliberté in 2008 een eredoctoraat. Het jaar ervoor won Guy Laliberté de Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year-award in drie categorieën: Québec, Canada en Internationaal. In 2004 ontving hij de Order of Canada, de hoogste onderscheiding van het land, van de gouverneur-generaal van Canada.  In hetzelfde jaar werd hij door Time Magazine genoemd als een van de 100 meest invloedrijke personen ter wereld. In 2003 werd hij door de Condé Nast-groep geëerd als onderdeel van het Never Follow Program, een eerbetoon aan uitvinders en innovators. In 2001 werd hij door de Académie des Grands Montréalais uitgeroepen tot 'Great Montrealer'. In 1997 ontving Guy Laliberté de Ordre National du Québec, de hoogste onderscheiding die door de regering van Québec wordt uitgereikt.

• Franco Dragone

  Director

  A good many of Cirque du Soleil's creations bear the stamp of Franco Dragone's poetic and social vision. Between 1985 and 1998, Dragone directed no fewer than 10 productions: Cirque du Soleil (1985), La magie continue (1986), We Reinvent the Circus (1987), Nouvelle expérience (1990), Saltimbanco (1992), Mystère (1993) Alegría (1994), Quidam (1996), La Nouba and "O" (1998). He also directed the full-length feature Alegria, which came out in the spring of 1999.

  Franco Dragone had a major hand in creating the amalgam of cultures and artistic disciplines that characterizes these productions. Before embarking on a lengthy partnership with Cirque du Soleil in 1985, he worked with a number of theatre companies in Europe.

  A native of Italy, Dragone grew up in La Louvière, an industrial community in Belgium. In 2000, soon after moving back to his hometown, he founded Dragone, an artistic creation and production company.

• Gilles Ste-Croix

  Artistiek leider

  Toen Gilles Ste-Croix zijn ouders vertelde dat hij de showbusiness in wilde zeiden ze “Alles behalve dat!”. Ste-Croix groeide op op het platteland van Quebec, maar hij was vastbesloten om daar niet te blijven. Hij werd een hippie en een nomade, leefde in communes en maakte in de jaren zestig de verplichte pelgrimstocht naar de Westkust. Daar leefde hij in communes en volgde een paar dramalessen.

  Ste-Croix probeerde zich wel aan te passen en werkte zelfs een tijdje op een architectenkantoor, maar hij wist diep van binnen dat hij niet gemaakt was voor een gewone carrière in het bedrijfsleven. Tegelijkertijd was zijn zoektocht naar een baan absoluut niet doelloos of vaag. Hij zegt dat hij als tiener al een sterke drang had om te slagen en een evenzo sterke drang om te vermaken. Zijn entree in de showbusiness gebeurde op een zeer ongewone en onvoorspelbare manier.

  Eind jaren zeventig woonde Gilles Ste-Croix in een commune in Victoriaville, Quebec. Hij plukte appels om de kost te verdienen. Op een dag bedacht hij dat het werk een stuk makkelijker zou zijn wanneer hij de ladder aan zijn benen kon vastmaken en zo ontwierp hij zijn eerste stelten.

  Een vriend noemde toevallig het Bread and Puppet Theater in het nabijgelegen Vermont, dat steltlopen als basis gebruikte voor veel van haar voorstellingen. Ste-Croix ging langs bij het gezelschap en realiseerde zich dat zijn appelpluk- vaardigheden wel eens gewild zouden kunnen zijn in de grotere wereld van entertainment.

  In 1980 richtten Gilles Ste-Croix en een groep straatartiesten de Échassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul op en organiseerden een straattheaterfestival genaamd het Fête foraine de Baie-Saint-Paul. Dit zou uiteindelijk leiden tot de oprichting in 1984 van Cirque du Soleil met Guy Laliberté.

  In 1984 en 1985 bedacht Gilles Ste-Croix vele steltnummers voor Cirque du Soleil en voerde hij ze uit. In 1988 werd hij Artistiek Directeur van Cirque, evenals coördinator voor een talentenjacht die zich verspreide over de vier hoeken van de wereld. Hij was van 1990 tot 2000 Director of Creation [creatief directeur] voor alle Cirque du Soleil producties: Nouvelle Expérience, Saltimbanco, Alegría, Mystère, Quidam, La Nouba, "O", en Dralion. In 1992 regisseerde hij Fascination, de eerste show van Cirque du Soleil die in theaters in Japan werd getoond. In 1997 regisseerde hij ook de baanbrekende diner/cabaretshow Pomp Duck and Circumstance in Duitsland.

  Terwijl hij in 2000 nog steeds als werkte adviseur voor Cirque du Soleil, besloot Gilles Ste-Croix om een van zijn grootste dromen waar te maken: Gedreven door zijn gepassioneerde interesse voor paarden, richtte hij zijn eigen bedrijf op om de voorstelling Cheval-Théâtre uit 2003 te produceren. Hierin schitterden 30 paarden en acrobaten in een tent en ze reisden langs tien steden in Noord Amerika.

  In december 2002 keerde Gilles St-Croix terug naar Cirque du Soleil als Vice-President of Creation, New Project Development [Ontwikkeling Nieuwe Projecten]. In juli 2006 werd hij benoemd tot Senior Vice-President of Creative Content and New Project Development [creatieve inhoud en ontwikkeling nieuwe projecten]. Op dit moment richt Gilles zich op zijn rol als Creative Guide [creatief leider], naast Guy Laliberté.

• Dominique Lemieux

  Kostuumontwerper

  Dominique Lemieux heeft de kostuums voor alle Cirque du Soleil-producties tussen 1989 en 1998 ontworpen. Elke show uit die periode, We Reinvent the Circus (1989), Nouvelle Expérience (1990), Saltimbanco (1992), Mystère (1993), Alegría (1994), Quidam (1996), "O", La Nouba (1998) en Corteo (2005), draagt haar unieke stempel.

  Als kostuumontwerpster doet Dominique meer dan alleen het aankleden van de artiesten. Haar ontwerpen spelen een essentiële rol bij de creatie van de fantastische karakters die het universum van Cirque du Soleil bevolken.

  Met het oog van een expert creëert Dominique prachtige kostuums met verschillende kleuren en patronen, en uit diverse stoffen. De materiaalkeuze wordt echter niet alleen bepaald door esthetische overwegingen. Het is voor Dominique uiterst belangrijk te zien hoe materialen reageren op de huid, bewegingen, vuur of water en daarbij verliest ze de wensen van de artiesten nooit uit het oog.

  Haar passie voor tekenen begon op een jonge leeftijd en bracht haar uiteindelijk naar de Concordia University voor een kunststudie. Na haar studie werkte ze als ontwerpster en illustrator van kinderboeken. Later volgde ze de opleiding voor decorontwerper aan de National Theatre School (NTS) in Canada, waar de lessen in tekenen en kostuumontwerp haar carrière een nieuwe wending zouden geven.

  Van 1986 tot en met 1988 werkte ze als assistente van François Barbeau, één van Montréals befaamdste kostuumontwerpers en bovendien docent aan de NTS. In deze periode konden haar creaties in theaters door de hele stad worden bewonderd. Het duurde niet lang voordat theaterregisseurs uit heel Québec een beroep deden op haar talent.

• René Dupéré

  Composer and Arranger

  René Dupéré played a key role in shaping the artistic universe of Cirque du Soleil during its first ten years. His music for the shows Nouvelle Expérience, We Reinvent the Circus, Saltimbanco, Mystère and Alegría reverberated – and continue to reverberate – well beyond the big top.

  In 1994-95, the albums Alegría and Mystère spent several weeks at the top of the Billboard charts in the world music category. In 1995 and again in 2004 the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal paid homage to the music of René Dupéré and Cirque du Soleil.

  A master of hybrid musical styles, René composed some of the music for the ceremonies commemorating the return of Hong Kong to China in 1997. The following year he created the music for the world tour of Holiday on Ice, the Amsterdam-based ice ballet troupe. He has also written music for several television series and films.

  René Dupéré’s talents have earned him a number of awards and distinctions. He is a two-time recipient of the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) Hagood Hardy award. He is also known for “Ismya Vova,” composed for an Air Canada ad campaign, which won a Golden Award in 1998 at the New York Publicity festival for Best Original Music. Laval University awarded him an honorary doctorate for his contribution to popular music in Quebec.

  In 1998, René formed his own record company, Netza, and released his third album with the label in October 2002. In 2004 he returned to Cirque du Soleil for the first time since the creation of Alegría in 1994, to compose the music and create arrangements for the show KÀ.

• Michel Crête

  Set Designer

  From 1990 to 1998, the environments for all of Cirque du Soleil's productions sprang from Michel Crête's imagination: he was the one responsible for the scenography of Nouvelle Expérience, Fascination, Saltimbanco, Mystère, Alegría, Quidam, "O", and La Nouba. He also had a hand in designing the three theatres that house Cirque du Soleil shows in Las Vegas and Orlando. In 1998, Michel Crête received the Entertainment Design "Production of the Year" award for "O".

  Michel Crête came to Cirque du Soleil in 1986 as costume designer for the show We Reinvent the Circus. His creations for that show, which was also recorded for television, won him a Gémeaux and a Gemini (awards recognizing the work of television artisans in Canada) for best costumes for a variety show.

  After graduating from the Scenography Program at the National Theatre School of Canada in 1984, Michel Crête quickly became one of the most sought-after theatre set designers in Montreal. Between 1985 and 1991, he designed costumes and sets for nearly forty plays, working with renowned directors and rising stars on the Quebec theatre scene. Three times in a row, from 1989 to 1991, Montreal's Théâtre du Nouveau Monde awarded him its Prix Gascon-Roux for best set design.

  In 2001, he designed the big top and created the set for Cheval, a production of the Cheval-Théâtre company founded by Gilles Ste-Croix.

• Luc Lafortune

  Lighting Designer

  In directing the lighting for the show KÀ, Luc Lafortune is contributing to his twelfth creation with Cirque du Soleil. He has been associated with Cirque du Soleil since its beginnings in 1984. That year, he was hired as a lighting technician backstage. The following year, he was at the lighting control booth for the young troupe's eight-month tour. In 1986, he became the lighting designer. Since then, his lighting creations have toured the world.

  At Cirque du Soleil, his creator's resumé includes the shows We Reinvent the Circus, Fascination, Nouvelle Expérience, Saltimbanco, Mystère, Alegría, Quidam, "O", La Nouba, Dralion, Varekai and Zumanity. He was also co-director of photography for the video recording of the show Quidam.

  In 2002, he worked with director Robert Lepage to design the lighting for British singer Peter Gabriel's world tour, Growing Up. Many other internationally successful artists and groups have called upon his talents. Since 1996, he has worked with, among others, No Doubt, The Eagles, Gipsy Kings and Swiss circus Salto Natale.

  Luc Lafortune studied theatre production at Concordia University in Montreal . He was originally interested in set design. "One day, during rehearsal, I discovered the ability of light to redefine a space, to make a strong contribution to the image and spirit of a show," he says. The experience inspired a passion that still permeates his work today.

  The excellence of his work has garnered him many awards. In 1992, his lighting design for the show Saltimbanco earned him a Drama-Logue Theater Award, given by critics from the California-based theatre magazine of that name. In 1994, he was chosen as designer of the year by the magazine Lighting Dimensions International (LDI). In 1997, the Martin Professionals show The Atomic Lounge, for which Luc Lafortune was artistic director, won the LDI for best light show. In 1998, he took an Entertainment Design Award for his lighting design for the show "O".

  Luc Lafortune is regularly invited as a speaker to share his knowledge and thoughts with students and professionals all over the world.

• Debra Brown

  Choreographer

  Debra Brown is world renowned for her unique choreographies blending acrobatics and dance. She joined Cirque du Soleil in 1987 as a choreographer for We Reinvent the Circus and went on to choreograph the shows Nouvelle Expérience, Saltimbanco, Alegría, Mystère, Quidam, “O”, La Nouba, Corteo, one act in Zumanity, ZED, Zarkana, Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour and Amaluna. She has also worked with artists and groups from a wide variety of disciplines including the 1990 Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain (Paris), the John Corigliano’s opera The Ghosts of Versailles, presented at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and Wagner’s Ring Cycle, put on by the Lyric Opera of Chicago. In 1994, Debra created and produced Apogée, a 50-minute trampoline-based ballet which premiered in Toronto and was also presented in both Los Angeles and San Francisco at “Passport ’96,” an AIDS benefit hosted by Elizabeth Taylor and Magic Johnson. In 1995, she worked with Luciano Pavarotti on the Metropolitan Opera’s production of La Fille du Régiment (The Daughter of the Regiment) in New York. Debra also choreographed Aerosmith’s Jaded video and energetic performance for the American Music Awards in 2001, as well as Madonna’s Drowned world tour. Debra has worked with major musical acts such as Shakira, Wyclef Jean, Céline Dion and Madonna. Her film work includes Catwoman, Van Helsing and Barney’s Great Adventure. She received the Innovative Choreography Award in honour of her exceptional contribution to choreography and dance at the 14th Bob Fosse Awards in Los Angeles in 1997. In 2002, she received an Emmy Award for her choreography of an act created by Cirque du Soleil for the Academy Awards.

• Guy Desrochers

  Sound Designer

  Guy Desrochers spearheaded the sound design of the Cirque du Soleil shows Nouvelle Expérience (1992), Fascination (1992) and Dralion (1999). A passionate artist, he also created the soundscape for the North American, European and Asian tours of Alegría.

  During his career, he designed the sound for more than 300 hours worth of shows, festivals and gala events, plying his trade alongside a multitude of artists spanning a wide range of musical styles. While in Montreal, he worked on the sound design of four opera productions: Nelligan, Aïda, Carmen and Les Ailes du Feu, a work by composer Philippe Leduc. He also worked in tandem with a number of major artists in the entertainment business, such as Bryan Adams, Céline Dion, Chris de Burgh and André-Philippe Gagnon.

  His outstanding work garnered him numerous award nominations from the Quebec TV and entertainment industry. In 1994, Desrochers received a Félix for best sound designer from the Association québécoise de l'industrie du disque, du spectacle et de la vidéo (ADISQ).

  In 2001, he completed the sound design for the show Cheval, a production by Cheval-Théâtre, an equestrian circus company founded by Gilles Ste-Croix.

  In 2002, Cirque du Soleil sadly learned of the passing of Guy Desrochers. However, thanks to the Dralion show, his work is still very much alive.
