Cirque du Monde does not claim to be a panacea for all social problems. Nor is it an entertainment designed to make young people forget the difficulties of their situation for the duration of a workshop. Cirque du Monde enables young people to achieve their full potential. It is an opportunity for its participants to experience positive personal growth and can be a catalyst in boosting their self-confidence and their sense of personal identity.
It is the main social program run by Cirque du Soleil, in which circus technique are used together with educational intervention to help young people. it targets at-risk youth. This social circus program was developed by Cirque du Soleil.
Social circus aims to help these vulnerable young people get their self-confidence back, make them realize their strengths and discover their hidden talents. Social circus programs are offered by organizations working with these young people.
For a social circus program to be successful, you need:
- Social workers who know about the clientele to whom such a program should be offered. They work with the youth in their city, from their neighbourhood. These are the local partners of Cirque du Monde.
- Social circus instructors who know the tricks, safety rules and best learning methods adapted to these participants.
- People who train the instructors to ensure that they all know the best practices, apply the same rules and achieve the same positive results.
- Cirque du Soleil coordinators who facilitate networking and help train the instructors and social workers, provide their support on special projects and work with partner organizations on ensuring the longevity of the program.
The program targets at-risk youth between the ages of 8 and 25, who usually come from low-income backgrounds. Often, they live on the street and have lost all self-confidence because they have such a hard life despite being so young.
Programs like Cirque du Monde can also benefit other types of clientele. For instance, in South Africa, it was used as a tool to motivate kids born with HIV to follow their treatments. In the United States and Mongolia, workshops were held in juvenile prisons. In Quebec, social circus was used as a truancy prevention tool.
By learning circus arts, young people have a positive personal experience. It builds their self-esteem. They have a better, improved vision of themselves.
Through this educational experience, the young people build a different relationship with society and the rest of the world that has—more often than not—rejected or forgotten them, creating outsiders.
The ultimate goal is to help these vulnerable young people to live better and have a better self-image. By seeing themselves in a positive light, they develop a better opinion of the world around them.
Cirque du Monde is an amalgamation of two names: Cirque du Soleil and Jeunesse du Monde.
Jeunesse du Monde is a non-profit organization from Quebec. It aims to make young people aged 18 and 30 into committed citizens by promoting sustainable development, respect for human rights, social justice and other related concepts.
Jeunesse du Monde and Cirque du Soleil are the entities behind this program, which was founded in 1995.
