From a group of 20 street performers at its beginnings in 1984,Cirque du Soleil is now a major Quebec-based organization providing high-quality artistic entertainment. The company has close to 4,000 employees, including 1,300 performing artists from close to 50 different countries. Over the past 15 years, set and props designer Patricia Ruel has contributed to the success of a myriad of stage and television productions both in Quebec and abroad. She has worked with various theatre directors, including Dominic Champagne, Fernand Rainville and Robert Lepage. She designed the props for two operas, 1984 (2005) and The Rake’s Progress (2007), both directed by the latter. In the television world, Patricia served as Artistic Director on many productions in Quebec such as the end-of-the-year TV special Bye Bye (2010, 2011 and 2013), for which she received a Gémeau award on each occasion – a triple success recognized by an Immortel award. Since 2012, Patricia has been involved in numerous large-scale projects in the United States (the Fun performance at the Grammy Awards in 2013 by Moment Factory; The Nutcracker with the Nevada Ballet in 2013-2014), in France (Les Caprices de Marianne at the Reims Opera in 2014), in Chile and Peru (Circo Jumbo in 2013-2014), and in Quebec (Foresta Lumina by Moment Factory in 2014-2015), among others. Les Caprices de Marianne received the Claude-Rostand Critics Award in 2015. LUZIA marks Patricia Ruel’s seventh collaboration with Cirque du Soleil following her work on , The Beatles LOVE, Viva ELVIS and Amaluna as Props Designer, and WINTUK and Banana Shpeel as Set Designer.
